Question:

: I have a 12 week old JRT who has on occasion showed aggression towards me. It is usually when I won't let him do what he wants to do. For instance, I took him outside but I had to carry him to his normal spot because my husband had sprayed the driveway with Roundup. He wanted to get down and when I wouldn't let his he bared his teeth, snared and tried to bite me. This has happened a couple of other times too. I just hold him real tight, especially his head, and tell him no. It takes a couple of these before it has any effect. What should I do? Am I doing the right thing. Why is be being so aggressive toward me, the person he has bonded with? Help.

Response:

Hi Laura,

It sounds like your pup needs to learn who is boss in the house. I highly suggest some obedience classes. He may still be a bit young, but you can ask the instructor at what age they allow pups.

You also shouldn't have to correct a dog more than once.

Without actually seeing what's happening it's hard to know if this is truly "aggression", but pups will test their boundaries. They need to learn what is and what isn't acceptable.

I also suggest reading the FAQs on this site.

Good luck,

Jane Colvin
