| Question: : I have a 7mths JRT. He is very strong and hyper. Everytime I bring him out for a walk, he goes into hunt mode. i.e. He will chase at every cats in sight, sniff around the grass fields, eat at any junk food or even cat/dog shit. I'm very afraid to see him chewing something as my friend's dog had died from eating garbage food on the streets. : Hence, Is there any way to prevent him from eating outside. How to take those stuffs from his mouth without hurting my fingers. I tried to feed him half-hour before the walk, but it doesn't work out. : Please advise. : Ching Yuen
I've often thought that JRTs should be named after brands of vacumn cleaners since they are so inclined to "suck up" everything on the ground... :-) Preventing the behavior requires that you teach your little guy two commands: "leave it!" when he starts sniffing at something and "drop it!" if you weren't paying attention and he got something in his mouth. :-) These two commands are best taught when you have control over your dog -- at home and on lead. The "bait" is a treat but the reward is praise and a more desireable treat that is in your hand (at his eye level, not on the ground.) It takes a bit of practice to get the timing right -- call/command/reward -- so please be patient...and consistent. Good luck, |
