Whinning and howling at night

I just recently purchased our Jack Russell, He is now 8 weeks old. I purchased a crate for him to sleep in at night and he whinned and howled all night long. The next night I tried a different approach by putting him in the utility room with newspaper on the floor. He started whinning and howling as soon as the door was shut and continued throughout the night, keeping the entire family awake. The breeder i purchased him from kept him in the same manner as I'am with no howling problems at all, Can you Please, Please give some advice on how to elminate this problem.
