Question:

: My 8 month JRT is very intellegent. I taught him how to sit, stay, and come. But when he gets loose outside my fence, he goes crazy. He doesn't listen, I tried calling his name and telling him to come, I have to chase him. I'm thinking about neutering him. Is that a good idea?

: Thank YOU,
: Ricky

Hi Ricky,

Recall is one of the toughest commands to get 100% out of a dog, especially a JRT because they have so much to do!

It's important to work on the "COME" command, first it must be done on-lead. And remember, never, ever call your dog to you for anything he may construe as negative.

If your dog hates a bath, don't call him to you, go pick him up. Don't ever call your dog to you to punish him. If he hates having his nails clipped or be brushed, never call him to you. Just go and get him.

The command "COME" needs to always be a positive experience for your dog. This makes it somewhat easier to get a recall on your dog.

Until you can get a 110% recall on your terrier, I strongly suggest checking your fencing to make sure it's escape proof and never let your dog off-lead when not in a confined area.

The number one killer of this breed is death by automobile.

Regards,
Marie
