Question:

: Hi,

: My poor guy has been sick lately. Are most JRT's prone to allergy problems? He has gotten hives, licks his paws raw, and scratches his nose with his paws often. He is now on one cortizone pill a day and benzadril 3-4 times a day. The poor guy is sleepy all the time. Plus he had to have his tail re-cropped because he was licking it raw. The vet said he may have "fathom pain" in his tail causing it. Just wondered how many other JRT owners have dealt with these type problems.

: Any info would be appreciated!!

: Thx,

Response:

Hi Barb,

First I would get to a canine dermatologist and have some allergy tests done. This is the only way to really find out what he is allergic to and to treat it properly.

As to the phantom pain in his tail. I have been working with dogs for 25 years and have never seen true phantom pain in a tail. I did groom a Springer Spaniel who had a lot of problems with his tail because it was docked improperly and it had an exposed nerve. When the owners had the tail re-docked and the nerve properly buried the problem vanished.

Best,
Sue
