Question:

: I just adopted a 10 month old female JR who just began her heat cycle, and an intact male JR! I don't want puppies, so do you have any advice to offer me through this time?? How long does the average JRT heat cycle last? Can you spay a female while in her cycle??
: Thanks for any advice!

Response:

Hi Stephanie,
Heat cycles last 21 days and it is best to keep your dog away from the male for 28 days to be on the safe side.
Most Vets will not spay during heat cycles because of the enlarged uterus and the blood involved. .

I would suggest that you also neuter your male at the same time you spay your female. You are going to have your hands full with your male being intact, and if you think a female is bad during a heat cycle, wait untill your male knows she is ready to breed. My only suggest would be to board your male during this time.

Regards
Linda
