| Question:
: Our JRT will be 4 months on Sept. 8 and we were at the vet today to get his last set of shots. I know you advocate early neutering. I asked the vet about getting our male neutered at 6 months but they told they only spay females at 6 months and males at 9 months. They also mentioned they have to use a different type of anesthia for the JRT because they can't tolerate the regular type. Should I get a second opinion at another vet about the age to neuter? I don't want to end up with and a marker of territory or an aggressive dog. He's so cute and surprisingly well behaved for his young age. He's coming along well. We're doing basic obedience training till we can find a good trainer. The ones I normally used moved recently out-of-state. I'm also socializing him by taking him to public events (ie outdoor art shows, fairs) and getting him around my friends' and sister's dogs.
I think it's a good idea that you find another vet...and not just for the surgery. In my opinion, a vet who imposes restrictions based on gender and breed is not who you want caring for your pet. I suggest you ask your breeder to recommend a vet; your breeder should also be able to give you the names of fellow terrier owners who live near you and can direct you to a "JRT-friendly" vet. Good luck,
