Question:

: I read all of the posts about acorns but I didn't find what I was looking for. I have 4 giant oak trees in my yard and they are starting to drop acorns. When I get home from work I go out and pick up most of the acorns. My JRT still gets a couple of them before I can get to them. My question is will a few hurt him and is the shell or the actual nut poisonous? He seems to eat more of the outer shells than the actual nut. Thanks in advance for your help.

Response:

Hi Dave,
Yes acorns are poisonious to canines. If you will use the search and just put in Acorns you will find several post realating to this.

One suggestion would be pick up the acorns when the dog isn't out there with you. I learn acorns were toxic the hard way and lost a wonerful bitch to this problem many year ago.
If you need to know more I would suggest that you contact the poison contol center and a link can be found in the medical section and also talk with your Vet.

Regards
Linda
