: We got "Hank" from an Adoption Agency and have had him for about 2 months. In the beginning he was wonderful and had no accidents. I am careful to walk him for a mile every morning and every night. He usually does his "mess" then. The last few days, he messes in his crate! Is something wrong? He is 2 years old and seems extremely intelligent. We are baffled by his behavior. Hi Dianne,

When a dog suddenly changes its bathroom habits, this is a time to have him checked out by your vet. Many times these changes are due to a physical problem. He could have a bladder infection, a bacterial infection, etc.

If your vet rules out anything physical then your next step is to go back to Housebreaking 101 and put him back of a feeding/potty schedule.

My terriers are still on a feeding schedule and somewhat on a potty schedule and these dogs are 8 and 7. Dogs love routine and I am lucky enough to be home to keep them on one.
