Question:

: All of your advice so far has worked wonderfully. I wanted to know what is a reasonable expectation in terms of the time it takes to housebreak a JRT puppy (9 weeks when we got her, now is close to 13 weeks)? I understand that it is different with households in which both people work (which we do). I come home every lunch hour, take her out immediately, bring her in, feed her, and then take her out for a long walk. She is getting good at going when we tell her "Go pee", however she still eliminates from time to time in the kitchen (which is gated off). She is in her crate while we are gone. Some days she doesn't go at all in the crate and other days she does despite our consistency with her schedule.

Response:

Hi Kevin,

It sounds like you are well on your way to getting your JRT housebroken, but I have to warn you they usually aren't consistant until about 1 year of age.

Even then, they are so independent and smart that if they don't get taken out within their time-frame you are apt to come home to a deposit. This isn't the kind of breed that would rather die than to have an accident lol!

Now that's not to say that some terriers are 100% before 1 year, I am sure there are, but we use 1 year as a general rule.

Keep up the good work!
Marie
