Yes, it is normal for a 5 month old pup who was dumped at a shelter to be "freaked out" at just about everything that is new in his life. And yes, with proper training and patience, your pup will learn to accept spending time in his crate.

Please carefully review our Crate Training FAQ (including the "More reading") to learn more about how to get your little guy to accept his crate. I also suggest you sign up for a basic training class as soon as possible; you will both benefit from the teaching/learning experience.
