Question:

: HI!
: Recently my husband and I were told about diapers for dogs! Because he and I have 2 1/2 month old JR's, AND are moving into our newly built house, we want to do everything possible to save the carpet AND keep the "kids" happy. Have you ever heard of doggy diapers and if so, do you think they would help or hurt? We aren't home all day with them, but we do have a relative come to our house every 2 hours and let them out for a break and some play time. They never eliminate in the bathroom they stay in during the day and always ask to go outside (by licking our faces!) during the night. ( We're so proud! :) ) So, we only plan on using them at night, when we're home, while they are running around the house playing. Because they are still SO YOUNG (and still have a long way to go!), they do have accidents, but they're learning quickly. What do you think, diapers or no diapers?!?!
: Thanks!!

: p.s. Any tips on moving to a new house and keeping your puppies happy at the same time?!!?

Response:

Dear Sara,

Since the ultimate goal of housebreaking is to teach a dog NOT to go potty in the house, using diapers is counterproductive. Sure, the diapers will keep your carpet clean (!) but any progress you've made with your pups thus far will go right down the toilet. :0 (Sorry, just couldn't resist that horrible pun -- LOL!)

Have you considered crate training? It is one of the easiest and most successful means to housebreak a pup. Check out our FAQ regarding crate training (link below.) In your particular case, I recommend the wire-type crates so your pups can easily see each other when they're confined in their separate crates.

Another benefit to crate training is that a crate provides a "safe haven" for our pets. And since it's portable (!), a pet can feel secure where ever he is; like, for instance, in a new house... :-) I recommend you also take the pups over to the new place as often as possible even if it means you have to carry them around at first so they don't hurt themselves on any construction materials. The more familiar they are with the new house, the easier the transition will be.

For more tips on moving to a new house, try using our search engine. And please consider crate training your pups; I think a crate is a far better way to keep your new carpets clean then using diapers.

Best,
Leslie
