housebreaking

i just got my terrier about 1 month ago. he was in a crate prior to coming to me. i recieved him when he was 4 months. he was born june 4 2002. i have tried positive reinforcement with him when he does his business outside...praise, treats, etc. i've done the NO thing, i've tried making him a little bed, like a den. this dog just doesn't want to train for me and i'm almost ready to give him up. could you please tell me when or how long it may take to train him, and any other advice would be great. and yes i have checked the faq page. thank you
