| Question: : i just got my terrier about 1 month ago. he was in a crate prior to coming to me. i recieved him when he was 4 months. he was born june 4 2002. i have tried positive reinforcement with him when he does his business outside...praise, treats, etc. i've done the NO thing, i've tried making him a little bed, like a den. this dog just doesn't want to train for me and i'm almost ready to give him up. could you please tell me when or how long it may take to train him, and any other advice would be great. and yes i have checked the faq page. thank you
Thank you for first checking the FAQs regarding Housebreaking and Crate Training. As you have read, any type of training requires patience and consistency; a young pup especially needs time and understanding to learn what is expected of him/her. A 5 month old JRT pup should not be expected to be completely trained; at this age, your little guy barely has the physical ability to control his bladder. And he sure doesn't have the mental or emotional ability to deal with a new owner, environment and routine after only one month. Be patient with him, Roxxie, and with yourself. Understand what he is and isn't capable of and stay consistent with your training. And don't just TRY to train him, DO it. :-) Best, |
