Fighting with Other Dogs

Question:

We have a 2-yr. old JR, not neutered. He was a stray and has not been claimed. He really doesn't like other dogs and, as others have said, goes nuts when he sees them. Yesterday, he picked a fight with a dog running loose and slipped his collar. We were able to separate them (finally) with no injuries to either dog. We're going to get him fixed and sign him up for obedience classes but until then, if he picks a fight, what's the best way to break it up? It was really scary. Thanks for any help.
