Question:

: Are you serious when you say that after 6 months of trying to get these little dogs to do their business outside they still are unable to understand. I am horrified, I have only had Kirby for two weeks now and she is 8 weeks old. I cannot bear the thought of her still not understanding after 6 months of trying. Hey she picks up om everything pretty quick why is the toilet training so difficult?

Response:

Hi Jackie,

It's not so much they don't understand, it's that most problems arise when people don't understand that puppies don't have adult bladders and bowels that are capable of holding for longer periods of time.

This is a very independent thinking breed and if you aren't around to get it outside to relieve itself, the chances of it deciding on its own that its going to just go ahead and do it regardless is pretty high.

Some dogs will hold until their back teeth are floating, JRTs tend to not follow this type of behavior. If they need to go and you are not there to take them out, they will take care of business themselves.

While my adult terriers can certainly hold much better than a pup can, even they can leave a "gift" if we don't get to them in time. They are 7 and 8 years old.

Regards,
Marie
