| Question: : My JRT likes to pick up bark and eat it. When I try to remove it from her mouth she growls and nips at me. My wife read that JRT's do not like when you try to remove something from their mouths. I was just wondering if this is normal. : thanks
The behavior you describe is common in every breed, not just the JRT. However, that does not make the growling/nipping "normal" or acceptable. :-) The "drop it!" command is one of the most important lessons we can teach our terriers. Please use our Search Engine to learn how to train your pup to respond to this command. I also suggest that you examine your terrier's mouth on a regular basis...preferably when she doesn't have anything in it! By making this exam part of your daily routine, you can note any changes in her teeth/gums/etc and should she "forget" her training, she will be less apt to fuss if she's used to you messing her mouth. :-) Good luck, |
