Question:

: My 3 y/o male Spanky has been suffering with allergies for about 18 months now. The Univ. of Penn's Vet Dermatology department did both a skin test and blood test but showed nothing. We've done food trials also. He scratches at the corners of his mouth so bad he's all red and often scratches his hair right off. Steriods helped, but he can't be on them forever. It's not seasonally triggered or at any particular location. It's year round anywhere we're at. Please help with any suggestions....

Response:

Dear Brian,

Since the allergy tests showed nothing and you specifically note Spanky's scratching around his mouth, I have a few ideas/suggestions you might want to consider.

First: Is his mouth clean and jaw properly aligned? He is not too young to have dental disease/broken teeth and a mis-aligned jaw can certainly cause discomfort.

Second: Are his ears clean? An untreated infection can spread to other areas of a dog's head/face.

Third: Has he had an injury to his neck? If the vertebrae in his neck are out of alignment, he may not be able to assume the proper the position to comfortably eat/chew/etc.

Again, these are only ideas/suggestions for you to consider as you try to find out what Spanky's problem is... :-)

Best of luck,
Leslie
