Question:

: I have a 5 month old JRT who is the greatest little girl but is having house breaking troubles. I live in a three story townhouse and she does not alwyas make it to the bottom level to go. I am considering training her to use the potty pads on the middle level of the house. Would you recommend these or has anyone tried them?

Response:

Dear Stacey,

Until your puppy is completely housebroken, she should not be allowed to wander all over the house without supervision. It is our job to housetrain our dogs; they cannot, and should not, be expected to do it on their own.

The ultimate goal of housebreaking is to teach a dog to eliminate outside and to "hold it" until he/she gets there. If you use potty pads (or newspaper), you are essentially letting your pup know it's okay to pee and poop INSIDE the house. This only confuses the dog as to what is appropriate and expected and will make the housebreaking process not only longer but also more frustrating...for both of you.
