Question:

: I have a 10 wk old JR and I wanted to know at what age does he start to spray (marking his territory) and how soon can he be neutered?

Response:

Hi Alix,

Congrats on your new puppy! And thank you for planning on neutering him!

A male dog can start spraying as he starts to hit his mature sexuality. This can start around 7 months. Lots of shelters are now safely neutering and spaying when a pup is weeks old instead of waiting longer.

The terrier I have raised since a pup was done at 5 months of age. I recommend early neutering before they even have a clue what sex they are. This will virtually eliminate any indoor marking. Not only does early neutering help in this regard, it also helps to eliminate testicular cancer and greatly reduces the chance of prostate cancer.

Regards,
Marie
