Question:

: We have an adorable, well trained and basically well mannered JR puppy. We have been very consistent from day one with his training and it has paid off for the most part. He is very attached to my husband and I but has one behavoir quirk that we can't seem to understand! When either of us are sitting in a chair or lying on the sofa, he will jump up on us and stand on our shoulders or chest area for the longest time. Eventually, he will get down and lie down in our lap but he always has to do his "stance" first! Is this some type of dominance thing???? It's cute now, but may be awkward when he gets older and heavier!!

Response:

Hi Maria,

Yep, it's a dominance thing. My boy dog does this too. I scratch his ears for a few minutes (with a few kisses thrown in for good measure), then tell him to cut it out and push him aside. It doesn't really bother me 'cause it's done in a friendly manner, but if it bothers you begin telling him "no" and make him either lie down or get off your lap entirely.

Best,
Judy
