Question:

: Just was wanting to know if anyone else see's this with their Jack. Pete is 3 years old, he is very good. When I leave to go to work he looks so sad. Is it just me or could he really be sad? Also, how much sleep do dogs need. Is it bad if he sleeps a couple of hours then he is up from 3:00 pm until 9:30pm and then we go to sleep and then we start our day at 5:00am. Is it ture that most dogs sleep all day anyway?

Response:

Dear Darlene,

If you're sad about leaving him while you go to work, then he is likely picking up on your feelings and acting accordingly. Since it is our job as owners to make our terriers feel secure, I suggest you find a way to change YOUR attitude -- Pete will follow your lead.

Dogs sleep as much as they need or want to; there really is no specific length of time that should be considered "abnormal" or "bad" for any dog. If Pete isn't being destructive -- to himself or your house -- then you should assume that he's OK with both the amount of time he sleeps and the amount he's awake.
