Question:

: Jamie is 13 years old and always slept on my daughter's bed. My daughter has now left the nest and Jamie will not sleep downstairs in his own bed, without scratching at the door to get upstairs and keeping my husband and I awake. My husband will not have him on our bed, and when I tried allowing him sleep on my daughter's empty bed, he kept roaming in to our room and waking us..What do I do?Believe it or not, I DO prefer sharing a bed with hubby but can see no way out of this except to share with Jamie instead??

Response:

Hi Annie,

After 13 years, Jamie is used to being "close" to his humans so I'm not surprised he's feeling needy and confused. If you and your husband allow Jamie to come into your bedroom, you can easily teach him to sleep in his own bed in your room.

Please do not be offended if Jamie rejects what you consider "his bed." He may feel more comfortable sleeping on/snuggling into your daughter's bed coverings or he may roll himself into a blanket you leave on the floor for him.

Please give Jamie and yourselves time to deal with this major change in your lives. He needs you as much as you need him. :-)

Warm regards,
Leslie
