Question:

: We have aquired a 10 month jrt male(we have another female at 16 months), and we are at our wits end with his urinating in the house! Crate training (our preference) is not working, as he pees in the crate. In fact, he will go into his crate if it is open and he wants to pee. We have tried a dog bed, and he will pee in that, and they lay happily in it. He gets plenty of walks and exercise, and has a clean bill of health from the vet, and is fixed. He will literally come in after a walk and a pee, only to do it in the house again within the hour. Help!

Response:

Hi Emily,

Do you know the background of this dog? Perhaps he got used to peeing in his crate because his previous owners didn't take him out often enough. Once a dog gets in the habit of soiling his crate it can be difficult to correct.

Was he neutered early? If not, he could have picked up marking habits that can be harder to break him of.

Make sure to clean all areas he has soiled with an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle.

Put him on a strict feeding/potty schedule and see if that helps any. Dogs love routine and after awhile his body will start to program itself around the times he gets to go out.

If all of this fails then discuss with your vet the possiblity of water rationing. Don't attempt this on your own, talk with your vet first.

Regards,
Marie
