Question:

: hi i have a jack russel boy 1 year and he has been nutured he is quite fat he has not been hunting yet what exersices could i do to get him to loose some weight?

Response:

Hi Kenneth,

I am answering both of the questions you asked in this post.

Before you put your terrier on a diet/excercise program to lose weight, please have him thoroughly examined by your vet as there may be a medical reason for him being overweight. If your vet finds that your terrier is medically sound (besides being overweight), I suggest that he/she is who you should consult to get your terrier in shape. It has been my experience that the definition of "quite fat" differs from owner to owner so since I can neither see nor touch your terrier, I really can't advise you as to safest weight loss method for him.

Regarding hunting -- I recommend that you go out hunting with folks who work their terriers WITHOUT your boy so you can observe and participate without distraction. The next step would be to take your boy on a hunt with these experienced folks. Please to not attempt to take him out on his own at this time -- he is no "shape" to hunt and you have no experience in the field; this is a recipe for disaster.

Take care,
Leslie
