Female in heat and behavior problems

We have aquired a 4 year old JRT and are confused by her behavior. She was previously owned by an elderly man who passed away. We have three small children. Misty has been wonderful with the kids and is generally very easy going. Two days after bringing her home, however, she went into heat. She now goes into her crate, and if the children go near it she growls and tries to snap. We have not seen an aggression outside of the crate. She seems somewhat bothered by our youngest child at other times, but usually just gets out of his way. We are contemplating taking her back to the family that gave her to us, so that they can find a better home. We have fallen in love with her, though and only want to do this if she isn't going to adjust. Please help!
