Question:

: Hello. When my little guy was "growing up" his stool would be hard, sometimes lumpy, and he would go 3-4 times a day. He's 14 months now, and for the past several months, maybe more, his stool has softened significantly and he goes maybe twice daily. (FYI: We have changed his food from his original puppy formula to a small breed adult formula.) Other than the food changes, is it quite normal for him to only go twice a day and for it to be somewhat soft? Thanks a lot!

Response:

Dear Kim,

You're correct that the change in frequency and consistency is likely due to the the change in food. As long as your little guy is healthy then pooping twice a day is just fine; ditto for the softer stools.

By monitoring a dog's elimination habits, pet owners can often spot a health problem well before it becomes too serious to treat. Keep up the good work, Kim!

Warm regards,
Leslie
