Question:

: I am curious to know if any of you have tried or know anyone who has tried using the "litter training" kits for dogs available now? I was at the pet supply store the other day and saw the trays and the bags of litter. The literature with the kits indicates that training is a breeze (especially if you pay more money to get their video). My Penny is very bright and is willing to try anything once... Ha. I just wondered if this is a viable option for potty training or not. Thanks for your help and this is a great site. :)

Response:

Dear Kerry,

Actually, I do know someone who successfully trained his puppy to use a litter box. The now 2 year old terrier is house broken...but only in HIS house; the terrier pees/poops at will everywhere else. :-)

The way I see it -- be it a litter box or outdoors, you still have to TRAIN the terrier and success ultimately depends upon the owner. If an owner can successfully teach a dog to use a litter box, then that same owner can successfully teach the dog to go potty outside. Plus, the outdoors is free! LOL!

The bottom line, Kerry, is that housetraining isn't a "breeze" but it's not impossible or even really that difficult. As with any type of training, you get results based upon your efforts.

Best to you and your bright, shiny Penny. :-)

Leslie
