What are my first steps in training

I have my brothers JRT for the next 4 or 5 months. About 9 months old, neutered. He has had no training, I am working on sit right now. What steps should I follow. I have taken him for short walks and he is not leash trained as well. BUT I will not allow him to roam ahead. He walks at my left side beside me on the leash. He is playful, and not quite house trained, being confined in the kennel all day. How long should training sessions last? Rewards with treats? Thanks
