Question:

: I have a 1 1/2 year old female jack russell terrier. She is a great dog but very needy and has a complete anxiety attack when I start to clean the house! She runs to the backdoor to go outside or wants to be picked up and starts shaking as soon as I get out the cleaning supplies or the vaccum...she is making me crazy and is not crate trained so putting her in her crate is not an option. Why does she behave this way and what can I do about it? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Response:

Gail, I believe in side-stepping a problem, if there is no down-side that results from doing that. Why not just put your terrier out back before you start to use the vacuum? I don't see why its necessary to force the issue. If she is scared to death of the dreaded vacuum, then give her a break and don't confront her with it. Maybe you could leave it out, not running, but just parked close to where she eats. She may gradually lose her fear. Lots of JRT's attack that nasty vacuum cleaner & bite the heck out of it! Mine has tooth marks all over it. C.P.
