| Question: : I have my brothers JRT for the next 4 or 5 months. About 9 months old, neutered. He has had no training, I am working on sit right now. What steps should I follow. I have taken him for short walks and he is not leash trained as well. BUT I will not allow him to roam ahead. He walks at my left side beside me on the leash. He is playful, and not quite house trained, being confined in the kennel all day. How long should training sessions last? Rewards with treats? Thanks
Training sessions should be short and sweet and end on a positive, upbeat note. No more than 10-15 minutes max. If the dog is having trouble with whatever command you are teaching him, make sure to end the session with something he does do well and praise him. You can do several of these "mini-sessions" a day. Reward him with whatever makes him happy, small training treats or a toy. I am providing you a link to our recommended reading, there you will find some outstanding books on training that you might want to look into. As this is a message board, we just cannot go into a lot of detail on any given subject matter. Always keep this in mind: be brief, be fair and be fun. If you keep this in mind your training sessions with him should go well. Regards,
