| Question: : This is our first JRT "Spike" who is 9wk old male. His health and play is excellent and fitting in quite well especially with our 15y/o son. No apparent undue stress. Recently we've noticed his breath and chew toys smelling like urine. His appetite is fine and drinks normal amt fresh water. His coat is healthy with no offensive body odor. Never have we seen him eat his feces or drink his urine. What can be causing this? I checked your FAQs before posting this but could not find anything closely related. Any help would be gratly appreciated.
It is possible that Spike's chew toys are responsible for the odor. We found that the little fun toys (hard to resist!) that we could get at the grocery store often didn't smell very good out of the package and smelled even worse once our terriers had played with them a while...yech! So we not only buy their food from a petstore but also their chew toys. That being said, I also suggest that you discuss the "odor" with your vet when you take Spike in for his next puppy shot which, if not due now, is due next week. It's always a good idea to rule out a medical problem when dealing with a young pup. :-) Good luck and have fun with your little guy!
