| Question: : My 9 year old JRT had hip surgery 1.5 years ago to remove an eroded femoral ball. She recovered nicely but still limps especially after exercise. My question is --- she is only 9 years old but I am concerned about her "acting old". This may apply to all dogs, but when should I start looking for signs of aging in this girl? She is slowing down, seems "stiff" and goes through periods that resemble depression. Thanks. Joann
At 9 years, your terrier isn't old but she is middle-aged. Which means that her slowing down and having some stiffness due to prior injury, surgery is both normal and expected. Changes in behavior (shyness, fear, etc) can also be considered "normal" but only because they are often caused by a physical problem(s) associated with aging. I recommend that your girl have a complete examination that includes not only a full blood work up (including thyroid) but also an eye exam. In addition, I recommend that you consider changing her diet to a senior formula and/or adding supplements to her current diet to help the arthritis in her hip. Best to you and your "senior" girl... :-)
