| Question: : I wanted to respond to the young person just out of college who was considering a JRT as a companion. : First and foremost please understand that this is not a dog you can leave at home for long periods of time. They love their humans! They are like the energizer bunny & the tazmanian devil combined. And, they are more amusing than television. I would suggest that you seriously consider waiting until you are somewhat established in your new life before adding the responsibility of another living being. : As a recently single again professional who is out of the house 10 to 12 hours a day (commuting and working -sans happy hour or any other socializing) I can tell you it is not easy. I have had to hire a professional dog walker to come in and walk and feed my 2 angels each day. You will likely need to figure this sort of thing into your budget. Additionally, finding someplace to rent is going to be more difficult (and more expensive) with dogs than without. : Speaking of budgets...To those of you who want two. Not only will you double your fun & companionship you will double your food, poop bags, vet bills, food, treats, toys, bowls, loose that extra space in bed and have more fur to vacuum! Please consider not allowing your heart lead you, check with your head and budget! (I'd have at least 10 myself if I listened to my heart!) : A quick note to the person who has only had their second JRT for two days. Hang in there, it will be worth it! My female was 16 months when she came home with me and my male who was about two at the time. (both are fixed) She gave him quite run around for weeks. And despite his having his CGC, she was (and is) a bad influence. Be prepared for that! Just be the referee, make sure all the house rules get followed, and dole out lots of love. :)
Thank you for sharing your experience as an "only" owner and as an owner of two JRTs. Bless your heart for putting your terriers' needs before your own...they are truly lucky to have you. :-) Leslie |
