: My JRT is driving me crazy! Petey has just recently developed this bad habit of running and hiding whenever I get his leash to take him for a walk. He is such a fast little guy, and tends to hide behind the couch, or just run wherever I can't get to him. He totally thinks it's a game. I know he's having his fun, but I don't want to encourage this behavior in any way. I never, ever chase him when he does this. I put the leash down and go about doing something else, and just wait for him to come out of hiding, which he eventually does. My question is...instead of me waiting for him(which seems to mean he's still in "control"), what can I do to stop the "chase me" game before it even starts? I'd appreciate any ideas you might have.

I think the easiest way to handle this would be to pick the terrier up first and with the terrier in hand go and get the leash and snap it on and off for a walk you go without the chase game.
