Question:

: My Jack Russell is 2 1/2 years old. Within the last year he has started to lift his right-rear leg while walking. He tends to lift the leg when we are walking past a house where he knows there is another dog. He also has the tendency to shake when nervous, excited, or when he feels threatened. Is there a link between the two? Also are x-rays in order for his hind leg? He was recently checked out by a vet (hip rotated, stretched, etc.) and there appeared to be nothing wrong. He never seems in pain or slows down when this happens and is fine when we get back home to play ball. Am I worrying over nothing?

Response:

Hi Kristina,

It never hurts to get a second opinion regarding the health of your terrier. He could have a luxating patella but you would need to have a vet look for this.

If your dog is diagnosed with this genetic fault, much depends on the severity of the disorder whether he will require surgery. This is also a genetic trait that is passed down and if your dog is intact, he should be neutered and not used for breeding.

I am providing you a link where you can look into more information regarding luxating patella.

I really don't see any correlation between his trembling/excitement and his leg.

Regards,
Marie
