Question:

: My ten week old female loves to run around outside, especially at the park with other dogs, but she refuses to walk with me when attached to a leash.
: What is the best way to get her to accept a leash?

Response:

Dear Richard,

First, no more trips to the park -- a 10 week old puppy is not fully protected against disease until it has received at least 4 puppy shots. Even then, I recommend waiting until your pup gets her rabies vaccination at the age of 4 months.

Since you'll be keeping close to home, you can start by walking WITH HER on the leash in your yard when you take her out to go potty. By both praising and rewarding her for a job well done you are not only housetraining her, you are also teaching her that being on a leash isn't so bad. You can gradually work up to directing her where YOU want to go. :-)

Please take advantage of our search engine for more information on leash training, walking a dog, etc.

Good luck,
Leslie
