| Question: : A little over six months ago, we got a female JRT, Rolo, from a rescue group. She was not an abused dog, but she was neglected and left alone most of the time. Whenever we give her a chew bone or toy, she "buries" it in clothing, blankets, etc. and then "dives" in to dig around and retrieve it. I think this is one of the games she has made up for herself. My question is this: Is there any way to change this play behavior? This behavior has torn clothes, blankets, and now our expensive leather couch. We were with her in the house, although in another room. We adore her, but can't afford much more of this! Help!
The easiest thing to do in this situation is crate her when you give her these toys or chewies. Let her have them there where she can't destroy everything in her sight. Otherwise you are going to spend months trying to retrieve the items and telling her no, just for her to start all over again. This would be okay to do if she has a grasp of basic obedience, because you can then use the "LEAVE IT" or "DROP IT" command before trying to get the toy away from her. So it probably can be changed, but it will take time and trying to take toys/chewies away from a dog that doesn't know the commands can be dangerous. That's why I recommend crating for now until she knows basic obedience. The obedience work will make it much easier to alter her behaviors. Regards, |
