Question:

: I have put my Jack Russell through basic puppy training, and was thinking of the next class which is "off-the-leash" training. But I have heard that regardless of how trained your dog is to stay in one spot, a small rodent or animal can make him run or bolt without your control. Is this true? And should I bother with the classes, or just keep him on a leash?

Response:

Jennifer, Training your dog to come back to you, when free, is a wonderful thing - it might just save your JR's life one day. As far as going out walking, with the dog free, that depends a lot on the situation. Its true that a Jack can hardly resist a chipmunk or bunny that crosses its path. Recall is something that needs constant reinforcement, once learned. I've seen some amazing performances by Jacks off-lead in agility classes and other activities. I believe that any training you give your terrier is valuable, beyond the actual skill being taught. Even while walking on leash, its great to be able to call your dog to you when necessary. Good luck, and keep on educating your little guy. C.P.
