Question:

: Hi there,

: I'm about to get a male JRT puppy and I would like very much for our new pet to be socialized with my parent's pets (2 female miniature schnauzers 12 - 15 lbs each) since they will most likely be spending a lot of time together. I plan on having them all spend time together immediately - but should I be very concerned about them being alone together in the future? I figure they will all be approximately the same size in terms of height and weight.

: Thanks for you advice!

Response:

Hi Lauren,

You're right -- the earlier your JRT pup gets to spend time with his "big sisters," the better for all of them. However, youngsters can be quite irritating so these encounters must be supervised. Understand too that dogs go through several phases in the first 12-18 months of their lives so how your pup behaves with your parents' pets in the next couple of month is likely to change...and then change again, etc.

One of the best books I've ever read about the "stages" of puppyhood is "The Art of Raising a Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete. By knowing when and what to expect, Lauren, you are giving your pup and his sisters the best chance to be life-long buddies that you can trust alone together.

Best,
Leslie
