| Question: : We have a trail near where we live that is a great place to walk a dog. My male JRT is about 3 months old and the first time I took him out we walked 2 miles. The next time was 4 miles. When we got back home, he was dead tired. Since he is young, I'm wondering what an ideal walking distance would be so he'll calm down at night.
Just because your pup was able to walk 4 miles doesn't mean he should have; this is NOT age appropriate exercise. Please do not assume that "exercise" will affect your pup's need to eliminate in the middle of the night. A 3 month old pup is not capable of "holding it" for more then a few hours...regardless of whether he/she is "dead tired" or not. Give your little guy a break, Dave; he's showed you that he's willing to do what you want him to so "teach" him to calm down at night by understanding his need to go potty...and his need for comfort.
