| Question: : Our new eight week chews on whatever she can get her teeth on -- anything in front of her face whether a toy, a shoe or a hand. This is pretty much the only way she plays and she is likely teething so the chewing is understandable. : SO, the question is when and how to begin to correct this behavior. : Thanks, : Joe
Yep, this is what an 8 week old pup does, they chew everything and pee and poop everywhere! :) You can start her training now. Whenever she puts something inappropriate in her mouth you give her a firm, but gentle "NO" then hand her something she is allowed to have. You will have to do this, and I mean it, a gazillion times. The key Joe is be consistant in the corrections, which means you have to correct her each and every time it happens. People that don't find that their dogs learn that their humans only "mean it" some of the time, and that leads to a dog that never really learns. Also in the interim, puppy-proof your house and keep things away so she can't get into stuff. You will have to watch her like a hawk because a puppy doesn't know that electrical cords shouldn't be chewed on. They are very good training for prospective parents haha! Anyway, I am going to provide some links for you to read and you should also use our search for previous posts regarding chewing and the inevitable nipping/biting.
