Hi Sue,

I wouldn't say this is a very common problem in the breed. My gut instinct is that your dog seems pretty young for having cancer.

One of my terriers had some weird thing happening on a front paw between the pads once. It turned out not to be anything serious and we'll be hoping your guy will be just fine too!
