Question:

: Hi, I just had a question about Lucy and her surgery. What condition would swallowing a marble cause? If dogs can pass quarters, or so I've heard, how come a round marble wouldn't come out? I'm always grabbing legos and various other small toys out of my 3 jrts mouths. I finally started closing the bedroom doors when the dogs are in. But I still have to be vigilent, Willie gets in the shower stall and licks the soap when he can. I know it is because he mutters "bad words" when I put him in the kennel!LOL Anyway, I was just curious about the surgery. Thanks, Shelly

Response:

Hi Shelly,

My guess is the marble is fairly weighty and obviously hung up somewhere especially if it was one of those large marbles.

My vet told me of a lab that swallowed a ball that sat in the dog's stomach for quite awhile before it started to make its journey and got stuck. Unfortunately for the dog's owner that trip happened on the weekend when he ended up needing to take the dog to a 24 hour clinic. Bad timing!

We had a scare just this past week with our terrier that had a peach pit removed just 6 months ago. He was x-rayed and had an ultra-sound and they found a suspicious area but couldn't really see anything. They wanted to perform an exploratory on him but lucky for all of us he improved over the weekend and is now back to his bad self. :) Unfortunately I had to live with his very bad gas for a few days, and lucky for me he wanted to be by me constantly during his recuperation haha!

It just goes to show that you have to be constantly vigilant with these guys. It really is like having a perpetual toddler.

Regards,
Marie
