| Question: : My Jack "Mason" that is now 2 1/2 years old has begun rolling in other dog's poop and dead fish if she can find them. Why would she do this and how can I stop her? Also, she runs from me when my husband isn't home, how can I break her of this bad habit? Please give me your best advice!!!!
While Mason is showing what we consider disgusting behavior, she is actually doing what comes naturally to dogs. Rolling in smelly things is steeped in the wolf tradition. Dogs do this because it is instinct, this rolling is supposed to mask the scent of the dog itself which was useful when hunting. The only thing you can do is to really keep an eye out on her, and the minute you see her ready to drop and roll, either give a leash correction or tell her "NO." As far as your other problem, I suggest that you and Mason attend obedience school together. This way Mason will understand that she also needs to listen to you. I took my Brody through obedience school and then my husband also took him, this way he listens to both of us. Regards, |
