Question:

: I have a 9 week old JRT named buddy and he is a great dog, I know he is too young to potty train so I have paper he can use. What age is best to start training Buddy outside, I don't want to start too early and confuse or stress him unnessasarily.

: Thank you. Jeromy

Hi Jeromy,

I start potty training my puppies the day they come home to live with me. If you have your own backyard there shouldn't be a reason not to be taking your little one outside to learn to eliminate there. As long as he is getting his series of shots he should be okay. I wouldn't take him outside of the yard at this age, that's to say very public places like parks etc wouldn't be a good idea.

I don't recommend paper training as it only confuses the dog and ends up with you having to do twice the work.

Regards,
Marie
