Question:

: Marie, thanks for your nice and positive response to me on May 6 regarding the loss of my Thomas. Since then I have been through every breeder listed in the JRTCA directory, and either the unborn litters are spoken for, there's nothing available, or it's not what I want. Is it really this hard to find a new pup? I DO NOT want a carbon copy of Thomas, just a face that melts my heart. Do the great markings always go first, or do people pick for other things? Is it advised to pick the breeding, then take a chance putting money down? Is there any other way to get a sound, beautiful dog? I'm just contacting anyone I can to get word out. Thanks in advance if you can give me direction. There is nothing at all here in KC except backyard breeders. You guys are great. Laura

Hi Laura,

I'm sorry to hear that you have been hitting a brick wall so far in your search. Sometimes it just takes a bit of time to find just the right dog for you. There may be a reason for this happening to you right now (call it fate or someone up above planning a very special dog for you that has not shoewn up yet :) ).

A lot depends on what you are looking for Laura, if you are looking for a show quality dog with the breeding you are looking for then you might have to be put on a waiting list. If you are looking for particular markings, well, that's harder to determine in every litter as one never really knows just what is going to pop up!

You will want to look for a breeder that BAER and annually CERFs their breeding stock, and some breeders these days are also checking for other problems inherent in this breed but understand that none can give a 100% guarantee on anything, but they can guarantee that if your pup is turns up not healthy to return the pup for another or make some other arrangement.

I am also going to provide you a couple of links. One is to the State Reps who might also know of good breeders in your area that are not listed in the directory and a link to our Rescue Reps.

I have a very soft spot for Rescue, as one of my terriers is a rescue terrier, who through no fault of his own (he was just being a Jack Russell) ended up needing a new home. I cannot begin to tell you the joy this guy brings to us each and every day. He's one of the smartest and funniest dogs I have ever known. He turned out to be talented and wins us many ribbons at the trials but that aside, he is just the neatest little dog in the world and we love him to pieces and cannot imagine life without our Brody. You know, maybe your next best friend is already out there waiting for you to give him the forever home he needs. So don't count out one of our older terriers. It can be a great way to honor your beloved Thomas by rescuing a terrier in need.

Good luck in your search Laura, I am sure just the right new friend will come into your life.

Warm regards,
Marie
