| Question: : Currently our JRT sleeps in a crate at the base of the bed each night. However, in about 6 months, our family will double in size with the birth of twins. : We will probably have the babies in our room for the first few months. : What should we do about our JRT? Should we re-locate her or allow her to stay in the room? : In general (and in your experience) how do JRTs generally react to new babies in the household? : We've already taken the standpoint that we should continue to give her as much attention as possible so that she will not become jealous of the new babies. : My wife is pregnant and is due in October.
Congratulations! And thank you for including your JRT in your preparations to welcome TWO new members into your family members. :-) You'll find many posts on the subject by using our search engine. In addition, please see our FAQ regarding JRTs and Children where you'll find ideas on how to help your terrier deal with transition as well as some recommended reading (link below.) Generally, I have found that JRTs react to newborns the same way they react to any change in routine -- they either handle it well because they know, and are secure in, their place in the family or they don't because they aren't. Personally -- my niece was born prematurally when my sister and her husband were staying with us for the holidays. For 4 weeks, our 2 year old terriers dealt with not only a newborn in "their" house but also the comings and goings of various other family members/friends. And they were amazing! To this day, one of our family's most treasured photos is that of our terriers laying next to the make-shift bassinette (a laundry basket!) where my niece was sleeping. Again, congratulations and best wishes to you and your wife. Warm regards, | |||
