Question:

: I have recently moved into a new neighborhood. While my dog is contained in our yard during the evenings he hunts... Before moving he would take the occasional rat. This was not a problem, and in my opinion to be expected with a healthy terrier. Problem is that he has taken five possums in the last two weeks. If I try to crate him in the evenings or keep him indoors he chews on himself, whines, barks or throws himself at the crate or door until he can get outside to hunt. This is quickly becoming a compulsive order due to his high prey drive. What can I do to help control this behavior? We are losing sleep nightly, and my patience is wearing thin. The dog is eight years old and has always been a close family companion who lives in the house with us.

Sorry but I don't see much diffence in Possums and Rats, just bigger and mine get them all the time. Them may get a nip on the nose but that is no biggie. An instincts is not trainable and personally I would let him have at it.
Wish I could be of more help to you but as I said an instinct is not trainable and this is what makes the Jack Russells so enjoyable.
