: I am curious to know if JRT can be keep outdoors year round. I live in central Ohio and know people who keep other short haired dogs out year round. What would they need as far as a shelter goes.

Hi Jack,
No, it is not okay to keep a JRT outdoors year round, especially in the extreme weather we have in Ohio. Snow and ice are not the only factors; the heat and humidity we've witnessed in the past months is to be considered also. Weather and shelter are not the only factors, and neither is what other people do. Jack Russells are a very human-oriented breed, and the fact is that outdoor dogs of all breeds or mixes rarely get the level of attention and training they really need. There is more to owning a dog than a dog house, water dish and a couple of trips outside a day. A dog should be taken in as member of the family and treated as such. Keeping a dog outdoors on a permanent basis is not advisable. If you are not prepared to open your home to a pet, please don't get a pet. Shelters and rescues are too full already.
